Are You Using The Four Letter Word?

10 Quick Tips on How to Create, Distribute, and Profit from a Free eBook

Are You Using The Four Letter Word?

The most powerful word in the marketing dictionary is made up of just four letters: F-R-E-E.

It doesn't matter what kind of product or service you're promoting, if you can use the word FREE in your advertising and marketing, then your response rates will shoot up.

People like FREE stuff. In fact, many people simply can't resist the word FREE!

The problem is, you can't use the word FREE unless you actually have something FREE to give, for example:

  • Click Here To Download The FREE Demo!

  • Contact Us For A Price Quotation - It's FREE!

  • Take The FREE Tour Of The Member's Area

  • Order Now And Get ***** For FREE!

  • Subscribe To Our FREE Newsletter!
These are all effective ways of introducing the magic word. However, the best FREE idea of all is the FREE ebook.

It doesn't matter what kind of product or service you sell, you can use FREE ebooks as a promotional tool to carry your advertising AND build your reputation.

By creating an ebook that is related to your product or service, and by giving that ebook away for FREE, you achieve three things in one go:

  1. You give yourself a legitimate reason to use the word FREE in your advertising and promotion.

  2. You generate FREE publicity for yourself by promoting your product or service from inside your FREE ebook,

  3. You build your credibility by making your book useful and relevant to your target market.
To get the most out of this great FREE promotional tool, keep these points in mind:

  • The ebook must be more than just a blatant ad for your product or service. This could damage your reputation rather than enhance it. Keep your self-promotion present without being 'in your face'.

  • The content of your book must be useful and relevant to your target market. There's no point in giving away a FREE ebook that contains Internet marketing articles written by other people, if you're promoting guitar lessons. You'd be much better off doing a bit of research online ebook on the history of guitar playing. After all, the primary aim of the FREE ebook is to build your reputation in the eyes of potential customers.Encourage other webmasters/e-zine publishers to freely distribute your book to their visitors/readers. Be sure to state this clearly inside the book and anywhere you make the book available for download.

  • Offer to create customized versions of the ebook for those webmasters who want it. For example, you could place an ad for the webmaster's site on the cover page. This will encourage him/her to work harder at giving it away, thus spreading your message to more people.

  • Promote your FREE ebook by listing it on shareware sites and in ebook directories as well as on your own website and e-zine.
So, get busy. Ask yourself what it is that your target market is interested in. Make a book that feeds that interest and then start giving it away!

Marketing with ebooks.

Ebooks, are electronic books which can be downloaded from any website or FTP site on the Internet. Ebooks are made using special software and can include a wide variety of media, such as HTML, graphics, flash and video.

As a rule of thumb you should remember that almost anything that can be displayed or listened to on the Internet can be packaged into an ebook.

This means that an ebook can be interactive and can be very visually pleasing, this can be done without worrying about download times as once the ebook is downloaded the first time all the media and associated files are on the users computer.

Also what's great about ebooks is the fact they can be updated with the click of a button, so the user always has the most current version on his or her desktop.

Marketing with ebooks - using ebooks when marketing and promoting your site or affiliate program can be a very powerful method. Especially with free ebooks.

Lets say you wrote an ebook on your subject and offered it free on your website, people love free things and especially love free information about a topic they are interested in, so they will download it.

Included in your ebook you are going to have links back to your website, product, affiliate program etc. Since the ebook is on the users computer they have permanent access to it, if it's a good ebook with lots of information and one that you regularly update they will use your ebook again and again, constantly seeing a link or banner which directs them to your site.

The more of your website visitors that download your free ebook the more free exposure and repeat visitors you will get.

The real power behind ebook marketing however is the viral aspect of it.

Imagine that you post a little message inside your ebook and on your website saying that other webmasters can give away the free ebook too on their sites, they will love this as it will attract visitors and add value to their sites. Again the more times their visitors download it the more exposure and free traffic you will get.

There are also lots of ebook directories on the Internet where you can list your free ebook, so its not unusual for a good ebook full of information to be downloaded 10,000 times, this means every time one of the user reads it they think of your website and see your banner or link, its a great way to get lots of free traffic in a short amount of time and to constantly have your message in front of lots of people.

10 Quick Tips on How to Create, Distribute, and Profit from a Free eBook.
by Angela Wu

Free eBooks are a powerful viral marketing tool that can literally provide you with an entire network of people who promote your business, absolutely free. Here are a few quick tips on how to benefit from your free eBook ...

1. Provide Real Content.

This is the most basic tip, but it's vitally important. A simple "click" of the mouse is all it takes for someone to delete your eBook. Don't offer a simple sales pitch; provide your reader with valuable information. This will both capture his interest and build your credibility. He'll be more inclined to view your other products if he likes what he sees -- and even better, he may refer other business to you.

2. Use What's Already Available.

Creating an eBook doesn't have to be a long, painful process. For example, you could put together a related group of articles and simply add a few comments or an introduction. Or if you get a lot of questions about a particular topic, pick some of them and put together an eBook that offers the answers to these questions.

Please be aware that you will need to request permission from the author if you would like to use articles written by others.

3. Make Your eBook Attractive and Easy to Read.

eBooks are usually either in 'EXE' format or 'PDF' format. There are advantages and disadvantages to both formats, but regardless of what you choose, create a layout that's clean, attractive, and easy to navigate. Offer links to the major sections of your book and to places on the web where the reader can find more information. Use graphics sparingly, though; the more graphics you use, the larger the file size (and thus the longer it will take to download).

4. Provide Links Back to Your Site and Products.

For example, you can:

  • Put your website URL and logo on the cover page.
  • Embed affiliate links within the context of your articles, where appropriate.
  • Write up a dedicated sales page at the end of your eBook to promote a related product.
  • Refer to your own products and how it can help the reader. Keep it brief and use it only where appropriate; you don't want your eBook to sound like a sales pitch.
5. Encourage Your Reader to Pass It On.

Make it clear that your reader is welcome to distribute the eBook, so long as nothing is changed. He can put it on his own website as a nice gift to his visitors, or offer it as a bonus when people subscribe to his newsletter. The more places your eBook appears, the more free exposure you get.

6. Offer Co-Branding or Re-Branding.

To encourage other webmasters to distribute your eBook to their guests, you can offer to 'brand' the book with their URL and logo. Some eBook compilers include this as one of their features. One of them is the Activ E-Book Compiler, a solid affordable option available at http://buildyourhomebiz.com/ebookcompiler.html.

7. Promote, Promote, Promote.

There are plenty of ways to promote your eBook. These include:

  • Listing it in eBook directories.
  • Promoting it in your email (or message board) sig file.
  • Posting to appropriate 'announcement' groups or lists.
  • Creating a special page just for the eBook and submit that page to the search engines.
  • Offer the book to your list of business contacts and let them know that they're welcome to distribute it to their own guests.
There are many other ways to distribute your eBook; be creative!

8. Consider Selling Advertising.

If you have a heavily trafficked site and the stats to prove it, you may be able to sell advertising within your eBook. Naturally you won't want too many ads ... but a banner at the top and bottom of each page is fairly common.

You can also choose to use that space for your own ads ... or offer them to select webmasters in exchange for some additional promotion.

9. Build Your File of Testimonials.

Chances are, if people love your eBook you'll start to receive unsolicited testimonials. Ask the person for permission to use his or her testimonial within your marketing materials. It will show that you have a lot of happy customers - and help to persuade visitors to make a purchase.

10. Consider Using an Autoresponder for Follow-Up.

You may want to offer your free eBook in exchange for an email address. This gives you the opportunity to repeatedly market to the reader. Instead of giving him a free eBook and then never contacting him again, you 'grab' him while his interest is at a peak and continue to offer more free information through your follow-up autoresponder. At the end of your message, encourage the reader to take a look at what else you have to offer.
